Spring of Hope: Myitkyina Education Initiative
Guchuan in Kachin State: A New Hope for Borderland Education

Origins
In the northwestern corner of Myanmar, Kachin State borders both China and India,
yet remains a region where countless families have been displaced by ongoing border
conflicts. Amidst the turmoil, these communities yearn for opportunities to learn and
for a safe haven where they can grow up alongside their loved ones in peace. In the past, we primarily focused its efforts in northeastern Shan State and along the
Burma Road, working closely with suburban Chinese-language schools and
communities to refine and implement various initiatives. However, we noticed that
many veteran educators from Kachin State tirelessly journeyed to our main hub in
Lashio to obtain educational resources, such as free, color-illustrated textbooks. Their
unwavering dedication to their students and proactive engagement with our team
inspired us to extend our support further into Kachin State, where education remains
an urgent need.
After conducting on-site visits in 2019, the Service Team selected Myitkyina, the
capital of Kachin State, as the starting point for this new endeavor in 2020.
Collaborating with local education leaders, we identified a suburban location to
establish a new resource service center and Chinese-language school. This center also
provides accommodation and care for orphaned children in need, creating a
comprehensive three-in-one facility. Over the next two years, we actively participated
in every stage of development—from purchasing land and constructing school
facilities to providing operational guidance and sharing experiences. The school was
named Guchuan, symbolizing a "spring of hope" to nourish the next generation with
the transformative power of education.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand this initiative to shelter more children displaced by
border conflicts, offering them a complete and professional education system. By
establishing a localized educational resource network, we hope to significantly
enhance the efficiency of resource distribution. This milestone represents a deeper
commitment to advancing education in northern Myanmar.
Current Status
We are deeply grateful to Principal Xia and his wife, whose steadfast dedication at the
forefront continues to provide a safe educational haven for children, helping them
grow and thrive.
“Every child deserves a fair opportunity to learn.”
This is our vision, and we invite you to join us in making this dream a reality.
